Turts

Rather than devising some sort of structured narrative I'm just going to group pictures by organism until I'm taken by some other organizational whim. Here are some turtles.

All of these turtles are hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata), which are critically endangered, primarily because their stunning shells are used to make tortoiseshell products. Palau's traditional form of women's money was small shallow bowls carved from hawksbill shells, but today killing hawksbills and selling, trading, or creating hawksbill products is outlawed under CITES. We see them quite often in Palau, but populations worldwide remain low.
